The Ultimate Baked Mac & Cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). The heat will be crucial for achieving that desired golden crust on top.

  2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. This stage is vital; ensure not to overcook them. Drain and set aside, allowing them time to cool.

  3. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring continuously. This mixture, known as a roux, forms the basis of your superb cheese sauce.

  4. Gradually whisk in the warm milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes. It’s crucial to keep stirring to achieve a smooth consistency.

  5. Remove from heat and stir in the cheese until melted and smooth. The cheese will create a tremendous creamy texture within the sauce.

  6. Add salt, pepper, and paprika to the cheese sauce. Stir well to incorporate all the flavors evenly.

  7. Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce and mix well. Make sure every piece of macaroni is coated in that tremendous sauce.

  8. Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish. Ensure you spread it evenly to ensure uniform cooking.

  9. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top, providing a delightful contrast to the smooth cheese.

  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly. Keep an eye on it during the last few minutes to prevent any burning.

  11. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving to allow the dish to set slightly, making it easier to serve.
