Directions
-
Begin by removing the stems from the dried chile de árbol. This simple step is crucial as it allows the chiles to release their tremendous flavor during cooking.
-
In a skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, gently add the chiles. Toast them lightly for about 10–15 seconds on each side until fragrant, taking care not to burn them.
-
After toasting, add the garlic and onion to the skillet. Sauté these ingredients until they become lightly charred. This enhances the overall flavor, bringing out a tremendous depth in the sauce.
-
Once the chiles, garlic, and onion are ready, transfer them to a blender. Add the chopped tomatoes to the blender as well. Their natural sweetness will balance the chiles’ heat.
-
Pour in the water and season with salt. Blend the mixture until it reaches your desired consistency, whether smooth or slightly chunky.
-
After blending, taste the sauce and adjust the salt as needed. If you prefer, you can also add lime juice at this stage; it adds a lovely brightness to the overall flavor.
-
Allow the salsa to rest for about 5 minutes. This step is essential as it helps the flavors meld together for a more robust taste. Your Tree Chile Red Sauce is now ready to serve or store chilled.
