Texas Sheet Cake

Directions

Follow these simple steps to create a tremendous Texas Sheet Cake that everyone will love:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and generously grease a large sheet pan, approximately 13×18 inches. Ensuring the pan is well-greased will help the cake release easily once baked.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. This will form the base of your cake, providing structure and sweetness.

  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter, water, and cocoa powder. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the butter melts and everything starts to simmer. The aroma of chocolate will fill your kitchen!

  4. Once melted, pour this warm chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl. Stir until everything is smoothly blended, and the batter is lump-free.

  5. Add in the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the mixture. Give it a tremendous stir until all ingredients are fully combined and you have a creamy batter.

  6. Pour the batter into the greased pan and spread it evenly. The batter should reach the edges to ensure uniform baking.

  7. Bake your cake in the preheated oven for about 18-22 minutes, or until the top springs back when gently pressed. Keep an eye on it; overbaking can lead to a dry cake.

  8. While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, heat the butter, cocoa powder, and milk over medium heat. Stir continuously until the butter melts and everything is well combined.

  9. Once warm, remove from heat and whisk in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until the frosting is smooth and glossy. This technique helps create that luscious texture we crave.

  10. If you like, stir in the chopped pecans into the frosting for added texture and richness. They’ll bring a nice crunch that pairs beautifully with the soft cake.

  11. After your cake has baked, remove it from the oven and pour the warm frosting over the top. Use a spatula to spread it evenly across the surface, allowing it to seep into the warm cake.

  12. Let your cake cool slightly before slicing and serving. It’s hard to resist diving in right away, but giving it that little bit of time will enhance the flavors and make it easier to cut.
