Swiss Steak

Directions

  1. Begin by cutting the beef round steak into serving-sized pieces. Using a meat mallet, pound each piece until tender. This step is crucial as it breaks down the fibers in the meat, allowing it to absorb the flavors beautifully.

  2. Next, dredge each piece of beef in the flour mixture seasoned with salt and pepper. This not only adds flavor but also creates a fantastic coating that will help to thicken the sauce later.

  3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the vegetable oil. Once heated, place the floured beef into the skillet, browning it on both sides. This step brings tremendous depth to the flavor profile, enhancing the dish remarkably.

  4. Once the beef is browned, remove it from the skillet and set it aside for now. This allows the juices to develop and will contribute to a more robust sauce.

  5. In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and bell peppers, sautéing them until they are softened and translucent, about 5 to 7 minutes. These vegetables add a tremendous earthy flavor base to your sauce.

  6. Return the cooked beef to the skillet and add in the diced tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Each of these ingredients plays a vital role in creating a rich, savory sauce that is absolutely irresistible.

  7. Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet and let it simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours. During this time, the beef will become tremendously tender, soaking up all the flavors.

  8. Serve the Swiss steak hot, ideally over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes or warm rice. The combination is tremendous, making each bite a comforting embrace.
