Ingredients
The Base
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk, well shaken
- 1-2 teaspoons red food coloring
The Filling
- 4 oz (1/2 block) full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh or frozen strawberries
The Frosting
- 8 oz (1 block) full-fat cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Fresh strawberry halves (optional)
- Edible gold sprinkles or red sanding sugar (optional)
