Directions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined; you don’t want to overwork the meat. Form the mixture into patties, about 1-inch thick. The ingredients should come together smoothly, creating a tremendous base for your steaks.
-
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet, letting them sear. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until a nice brown crust forms. Once finished, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate, allowing them to rest while you prepare the sauce.
-
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté them for about 5 minutes, or until they become soft and begin to caramelize. The tremendous aroma that wafts through your kitchen will draw the family to gather, eager to know what’s cooking.
-
Pour in the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to incorporate any delicious browned bits left from the patties. Increase the heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Return the patties to the skillet, spooning some of the broth over the top. Cover and let cook for 10-15 minutes until the patties are fully cooked, and the sauce has thickened, marrying all the flavors beautifully.
-
Serve the hamburger steaks hot, garnished with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. Consider pairing them with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered rice to soak up that tremendous gravy.
