Southern Style Hamburger Steak With Gravy

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, crushed crackers, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix gently until just combined. Shape the mixture into patties, each about 3/4 inch thick. The tenderness of the beef will create a tremendously juicy result.

  2. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they are nicely browned and cooked through. This step is crucial for developing a tremendous flavor crust on the patties.

  3. Once cooked, carefully remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. Pour off some of the excess grease, but leave enough in the pan to create a flavorful base for the gravy.

  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Sauté them over medium heat until they are softened and translucent, which takes about 3-4 minutes. The sweetness of the onions will mingle beautifully with the meat.

  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring well to combine. Cook for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste, allowing the mixture to take on a light golden hue.

  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking the gravy until it thickens to your desired consistency, which will only take a few minutes.

  7. Finally, return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the rich gravy over them. Simmer for a few minutes until everything is heated through. The combination of the beef with the creamy gravy will create a tremendously satisfying dish, ready to be served hot.
