Directions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, crushed crackers, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix gently until just combined. Shape the mixture into patties, each about 3/4 inch thick. The tenderness of the beef will create a tremendously juicy result.
-
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they are nicely browned and cooked through. This step is crucial for developing a tremendous flavor crust on the patties.
-
Once cooked, carefully remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. Pour off some of the excess grease, but leave enough in the pan to create a flavorful base for the gravy.
-
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Sauté them over medium heat until they are softened and translucent, which takes about 3-4 minutes. The sweetness of the onions will mingle beautifully with the meat.
-
Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring well to combine. Cook for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste, allowing the mixture to take on a light golden hue.
-
Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking the gravy until it thickens to your desired consistency, which will only take a few minutes.
-
Finally, return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon the rich gravy over them. Simmer for a few minutes until everything is heated through. The combination of the beef with the creamy gravy will create a tremendously satisfying dish, ready to be served hot.
