Embarking on your sourdough bread-making quest involves the following steps:
-
Mix the Starter and Water: In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter with warm water. Stir gently until they are combined.
-
Add the Flour: Gradually stir in the flour using a wooden spoon or your hands. You want to create a sticky dough that brings everything together, resulting in a tremendous texture.
-
Incorporate Salt: Once the flour is well mixed in, add the salt. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. This process is essential to develop gluten, which gives the bread its structure.
-
Time to Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot for 4-6 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This slow fermentation time is key to developing flavor.
-
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). This high temperature will help you achieve that beautiful crust.
-
Shape the Dough: Once the dough has risen, gently deflate it and shape it into a loaf. You can choose to shape it round or rectangular, depending on your baking sheet.
-
Rest Again: Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet. Allow it to rest for another hour, covered with a towel. This final rise will make your bread wonderfully light and fluffy.
-
Bake the Bread: Once the dough has rested, put it in your preheated oven. Bake it for 30-35 minutes or until it turns a perfect golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
-
Cool the Bread: After baking, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Allowing it to cool before slicing helps maintain the wonderful texture and aroma.
