Smoked Sausage and Cabbage Skillet

Directions

  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. The oil should shimmer lightly, signaling that it’s ready for the next step.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. The onion’s natural sweetness will begin to develop, creating a tremendous flavor base for the dish.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. The garlic will add a fragrant quality, enhancing the overall aroma of the skillet.
  4. Add the kielbasa to the skillet and cook until it is nicely browned, about 5-7 minutes. This step is crucial, as browning the sausage adds depth and richness to the dish.
  5. Push the sausage to the side of the skillet and add the remaining olive oil. This ensures that the cabbage has enough fat to sauté and becomes tender and delightful.
  6. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet, seasoning it with salt and pepper. Toss everything together to ensure an even distribution of flavors.
  7. Cover the skillet and let it cook until the cabbage is tender, about 10-15 minutes. This covering step helps create a tremendous steam effect, cooking the cabbage beautifully.
  8. Remove the lid, stir in the red wine vinegar, and adjust seasoning to taste. The vinegar will brighten the dish, adding a nice acidity that balances the richness of the sausage.
  9. Serve hot, letting the colors and aromas bring everyone to the table for a satisfying meal.
