Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to mix everything gently. Form the mixture into four evenly sized patties. This step is crucial as it lays the foundation for the tremendous flavor to come.

  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the pan. Cook them until they are nicely browned on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side. They should have a beautiful crust that adds to the texture of the dish. Once browned, remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion. Sauté the onions over medium heat until they become soft and translucent, approximately 5-7 minutes. The goal here is to coax out the natural sweetness of the onions, which will blend beautifully into the gravy.

  4. Once the onions are softened, sprinkle the flour over them. Stir to coat the onions evenly in the flour, cooking for about a minute. This step is essential for creating a thick, luscious gravy that clings to the Salisbury steak.

  5. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring steadily. You will notice the mixture starting to thicken. Allow it to cook, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a smooth, gravy-like consistency. This process will typically take around 3-5 minutes. The tremendous flavor that develops at this point is the heart of your dish.

  6. Return the browned patties to the skillet, nestling them gently in the gravy. Cover the skillet and simmer on low heat for 10-15 minutes. This will ensure the patties are heated through and infused with the savory flavors of the gravy.

  7. When ready to serve, plate the patties and generously spoon the onion gravy over the top. This dish pairs wonderfully with a side of mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables, allowing the gravy to enhance every aspect of your meal.
