Directions
-
Start by preparing the beef filling. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and a generous pinch of salt and black pepper. Mix these ingredients gently until they are fully integrated, but be careful not to overwork the meat. Form this tremendous mixture into oval-shaped patties, approximately 1/2 inch thick.
-
Next, heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering or the butter is melted, add the beef patties to the hot skillet. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they achieve a deep brown color. This step helps develop a tremendous flavor that will add depth to the overall dish.
-
Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the skillet and set them aside. Don’t discard the drippings; they’re packed with flavor. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Sauté the onions over medium heat for about 5 minutes until they become soft and translucent, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.
-
With the onions softened, pour in the beef broth, stirring to combine everything. If you prefer thicker gravy, mix the cornstarch with a small amount of cold water to create a slurry, and add it to the saucepan. Allow the mixture to simmer for 5-10 minutes. The broth should thicken slightly to create a rich, savory gravy.
-
Finally, return the cooked beef patties back to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let it all simmer together for an additional 3-5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
-
Serve the Salisbury Steak warm, garnished with fresh parsley if desired. Pair this tremendous dish with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete and satisfying meal.
