Reeses Earthquake Cake

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan thoroughly to ensure that your cake will slide out easily after baking.

  2. In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, 2 cups of water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Whisk these ingredients together until well combined and you achieve a smooth, lump-free batter.

  3. Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly across the bottom to create a solid base for the tremendous flavor layers to come.

  4. In another bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and peanut butter. Beat these ingredients until smooth and creamy, which will create a rich filling to complement the chocolate cake.

  5. Drop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture over the batter in the pan, allowing it to spread out somewhat but still retaining its shape. This will create pockets of creaminess in each slice.

  6. Sprinkle the chopped Reese’s peanut butter cups over the cream cheese mixture, ensuring every piece gets a bit of the chocolatey goodness that will melt into the cake as it bakes.

  7. Pour the remaining cake batter over everything in the pan, covering the creamy and chocolate layer while keeping some of the filling visible.

  8. Take a knife and gently swirl the cream cheese filling slightly into the batter. This step is important as it creates the “earthquake” effect, mixing the filling with the cake for that beautifully chaotic appearance.

  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake should have a firm top with some slightly gooey areas underneath.

  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan before serving. This wait will ensure that the flavors meld well together for a tremendously delightful experience.
