Red Velvet Brownies

Directions

  1. Preheat the Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (180°C). This step will ensure that your brownies bake evenly and reach that tremendous texture we all love.

  2. Prepare the Pan
Line an 8-inch square cake pan with parchment paper. This helps with easy removal once your brownies are baked and cool, preserving their shape and preventing any sticking.

  3. Melt the Butter
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the unsalted butter. It should be just melted, not boiling. This step adds moisture and richness to the brownies.

  4. Mix the Sugars
In a large bowl, combine the granulated sugar and light brown sugar. This combination adds a depth of flavor that distinguishes these brownies from standard chocolate ones.

  5. Combine Butter and Sugars
Add the melted butter to the bowl and whisk until combined. The mixture should be smooth and shiny, a tremendous sign that you are on the right track.

  6. Add Eggs and Vanilla
Mix in the three large eggs and one egg yolk, alongside the teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk until fully incorporated; this adds a rich flavor and lightness to the texture.

  7. Incorporate Oil and Cocoa
Next, add the vegetable oil and cocoa powder. Whisk until the batter is smooth and uniform in color. The cocoa powder gives the brownies their deep chocolate flavor.

  8. Color the Batter
In a small bowl, mix the red food coloring into about two tablespoons of the brownie batter. Once combined, fold this mixture back into the main batter. Ensure it turns a vibrant, uniform red—this is what creates that iconic red velvet look.

  9. Fold in the Dry Ingredients
Gently fold in the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and salt until no dry flour remains. Be careful not to over-mix; we want the brownies to remain soft and tender.

  10. Add the Vinegar
Stir in the tablespoon of vinegar. This secret ingredient brings a tangy flavor that brightens the overall taste of the brownies.

  11. Mix in White Chocolate Chips (Optional)
If you’re using white chocolate chips, now is the time to fold them gently into the batter. They add a touch of creaminess to each bite.

  12. Pour into the Pan
Pour the batter into your prepared pan, spreading it evenly. This step is essential to ensure that the brownies bake uniformly, allowing for that perfect, moist texture.

  13. Bake
Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out with moist crumbs for that perfect brownie texture.

  14. Cool the Brownies
Once baked, remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan. After they’ve cooled, lift them out using the parchment paper. This makes cutting them into perfect squares much easier.

  15. Make the Frosting
For the frosting, beat the room temperature cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar, mixing until fully incorporated.

  16. Flavor the Frosting
Mix in the teaspoon of vanilla extract, giving the frosting a lovely aroma and taste.

  17. Spread the Frosting
Once the brownies are cool, spread the frosting generously over the top. The creamy layer beautifully contrasts with the dense brownie base.

  18. Slice and Serve
Lift the brownies using the parchment and slice them into squares. Serve immediately, or enjoy them later as a tremendous treat.
