Onion Soup Chicken Bake

Directions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). This step ensures that your dish bakes evenly and comes out perfectly cooked.

  2. Prepare the Baking Dish: Lightly grease a baking dish using cooking spray or a smear of butter. This will help prevent the chicken from sticking, allowing for easier serving and cleaning later on.

  3. Arrange the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. It’s essential that the pieces are arranged evenly so they cook at the same rate.

  4. Prepare the Sauce: In a medium bowl, mix together the sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, dry onion soup mix, garlic powder, and black pepper. Whisk until smooth, ensuring all ingredients are well combined. The combination creates a tremendous creamy sauce that will infuse the chicken with flavor.

  5. Spread the Mixture: Carefully spread the mixture evenly over the chicken. Make sure that each piece is well coated; this is where the flavors meld together beautifully during baking.

  6. Add Cheese: If you’re using cheese, now’s the time to sprinkle it generously over the top. The melting cheese adds a fantastic layer of creaminess and a delightful golden crust when baked.

  7. Cover and Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes. This allows the chicken to cook through while staying moist and tender.

  8. Final Touch: After 35 to 40 minutes, remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. This step will create a bubbly and slightly crispy top. The chicken is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

  9. Rest and Serve: Once baked, let the dish rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This short resting period allows the flavors to settle, resulting in a more enjoyable eating experience.
