Directions
-
In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to combine thoroughly. Form this mixture into several uniform patties. The size is up to you, but about 1/2 inch thick is ideal for even cooking.
-
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook them for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and develop a nice crust. Once they are done, remove them from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
-
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook them gently until they are golden brown and soft, stirring occasionally. This step is crucial as it adds a layer of flavor to your gravy.
-
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. This will help to incorporate any flavorful bits left from browning the patties. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until it becomes slightly thickened.
-
Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, ensuring they are submerged in the gravy. Cover the skillet and let them simmer for about 20 minutes. This allows the patties to absorb the tremendous flavors of the gravy while remaining juicy and tender.
-
Once the cooking time is up, serve the hamburger steaks hot, spooning the luscious onion gravy over the top. Pair them with mashed potatoes or rice for a complete meal.
