Prepare the Chocolate Cake
Start by preheating your oven according to the instructions on the chocolate cake mix package. Then, prepare the cake batter based on the package directions. This usually includes combining the cake mix with water, oil, and eggs until everything blends smoothly. Baking in a 9×13-inch pan, the cake should emerge from the oven completely baked but slightly cool, setting the foundation for a truly tremendous dessert. -
Cool the Cake Completely
Once removed from the oven, set aside the cake to cool in the pan for about 30 minutes. After it cools, transfer the cake to a wire rack to allow it to cool completely. This is a crucial step, as adding ice cream to a warm cake can cause it to melt, losing its tremendous layered effect. -
Spread the Ice Cream
After the cake has cooled, take your softened vanilla ice cream. It should be creamy and easy to spread but not completely melted. Using a spatula, spread the ice cream evenly over the surface of the cooled cake. It should blanket the cake in a smooth layer that invites you to dive in. -
Freeze the Ice Cream Layer
Once you’ve got a lovely ice cream layer, it’s time to freeze the cake. Place the cake in the freezer and allow it to set for at least 2 to 3 hours or until it’s firm. This step is vital for a good slice that holds its shape, ensuring that the tremendous layers remain intact with each cut. -
Add the Hot Fudge Sauce
When the ice cream has set, warm the hot fudge sauce slightly in the microwave or on the stovetop. Pour gently over the ice cream layer, allowing it to cascade down the edges. This warm fudge provides another dimension to the cake and brings a tremendous flavor that harmonizes beautifully with the ice cream layer. -
Final Freeze
After you have the fudge sauce layered, return the cake to the freezer for an additional 1 to 2 hours. This will allow the fudge to set and meld with the ice cream even further. -
Slice and Serve
To serve, remove the cake from the freezer and allow it to sit for a few minutes at room temperature, making slicing easier. Once ready, cut into squares or rectangles, top each slice with a generous dollop of whipped cream, and finish with optional chocolate shavings or sprinkles for that extra special touch.
