Homemade Hush Puppies

Directions

  1. Combine the Ingredients
    In a medium bowl, combine the Jiffy cornbread mix, grated onion, cornmeal, milk, and egg. Mix until just combined—be careful not to overmix, as this can affect the final texture. It should be a tremendous blend that retains some texture from the onion and cornmeal.

  2. Heat the Oil
    Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. You want enough oil so that the hush puppies can float while frying. This should be about 2-3 inches deep for optimal frying.

  3. Fry the Batter
    Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry until they are golden brown on all sides. The sizzling sounds and the aroma wafting through your kitchen will be tremendous, pulling everyone to the kitchen in anticipation.

  4. Drain
    Once golden brown, carefully remove the hush puppies from the oil. Drain them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil, ensuring a crispy exterior.

  5. Serve Warm
    Serve warm, and let the hush puppies shine on their own or with a dipping sauce of your choice. Enjoy the delightful crunch and soft inside!
