Start by dissolving the sugar in the warm water. This sweet nectar will provide a tremendous boost for the yeast. Stir in the active dry yeast, then let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes. You will know it’s ready when it becomes frothy and bubbly.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. This mixture forms the backbone of our bread. Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients. Slowly add in the yeast mixture, along with the olive oil if you choose to include it. The oil adds an extra layer of flavor and tenderness.
-
Stir the mixture until a rough dough begins to form. Then, turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough with passion for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. This vital step helps develop the gluten, making your bread light and airy.
-
Once your dough is kneaded to perfection, place it into a greased bowl. Cover it with a kitchen towel and set it aside in a warm place to rise. Let it rise until it doubles in size, which should take about 1 hour. This step is essential for building texture and flavor.
-
After the dough has risen, it’s time to punch it down. Gently press out the air trapped inside, then shape it into a loaf. Place your shaped dough into a greased loaf pan. Cover it again and let it rise for another 30 minutes until it doubles once more.
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while your dough is rising. This ensures it bakes evenly and beautifully.
-
When ready, bake your loaves in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes. The bread is done when it turns a lovely golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped lightly on the bottom.
-
After baking, remove your loaf from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack. This step is crucial; slicing too soon can make the bread gummy and difficult to cut.
-
Finally, when your bread has cooled, slice into it and enjoy that wonderful, homemade aroma.
