Homemade Bread

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. This is essential; it activates the yeast, ensuring a tremendous rise for your loaf.

  2. Once the yeast is ready, add the salt and olive oil. Gradually stir in the flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms. The texture will change from sticky to more cohesive—the beginning of something wonderful.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes. This step is crucial, as kneading develops the gluten, giving your bread that strong, chewy texture. Don’t be afraid to put some elbow grease into this; the more you knead, the better!

  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size. This rise is when the magic happens—watch as your dough transforms, and enjoy the anticipation.

  5. Once risen, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  6. After the dough has finished rising, punch it down gently to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf, then place it in a greased bread pan. This shaping technique ensures that your loaf has an even texture once baked.

  7. Let the dough rise again for another 30 minutes. This second rise enhances the flavor and texture, providing a tremendous depth that is simply unachievable in store-bought bread.

  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown. The warm aroma filling your kitchen during this time is truly irresistible.

  9. Once baked, let the bread cool for a few minutes in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack. Allow it to cool completely before slicing to preserve its glorious texture.
