Directions
-
Preheat Your Oven
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Greasing and flouring two 9-inch round cake pans helps achieve that perfect cake texture. Take care to ensure every inch is covered. -
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a sizeable mixing bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mixing these dry ingredients well is crucial for a tremendous chocolate flavor throughout. -
Mix Wet Ingredients
Add in the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Mix until everything is well combined. You should have a smooth batter that is ready to rise beautifully in the oven. -
Stir in Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water to the batter. This step might seem unusual, but it contributes to the cake’s moist texture, creating a tremendous melting-in-your-mouth experience. -
Divide Batter
Evenly divide the batter between the two prepared pans. Make sure to smooth out the tops, allowing them to bake evenly. -
Bake the Cakes
Bake the cakes for 30-35 minutes. Insert a toothpick into the center of each cake; if it comes out clean, they’re done! -
Cool the Cakes
Once baked, allow the cakes to cool in their pans for about 10 minutes. Then, gently remove them from the pans and transfer them to wire racks to cool completely. -
Prepare Cream Cheese Filling
While the cakes cool, prepare your cream cheese filling. In a medium bowl, beat 8 oz of softened cream cheese with ½ cup powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. -
Spread Filling
Once the cakes are fully cooled, spread the cream cheese filling generously between the two layers. This filling brings a delightful surprise with each slice. -
Add Topping
For the topping, make a chocolate ganache by melting 1 cup of chocolate chips with ½ cup of heavy cream. Stir until fully combined and smooth, then drizzle over the top of your cake.
Finish with whipped cream if desired for an added touch of elegance.
