Grandma’s Apple Crumb Bars

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal later.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Set aside about 1 1/2 cups of the crumb mixture for the topping. This will add a tremendous texture contrast atop the delicious apple filling.

  4. Press the remaining crumb mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form a sturdy crust. Ensure it is compact for the best texture.

  5. In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch until the apple slices are well coated.

  6. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the baking pan, allowing the juices to mingle within the layers.

  7. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture evenly over the apples, ensuring every juicy bite will be encapsulated with that crisp topping.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. The smell will be absolutely tremendous during this process!

  9. Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting them into squares. This ensures clean edges and a well-formed bar that holds together nicely.
