-
Begin your churro adventure by gathering all your ingredients. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, butter, and salt. Stir these together gently, and then bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
-
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until a smooth dough forms. This will take a couple of minutes as you want it to pull away from the pan. The tremendous texture of the dough is essential for creating perfect churros.
-
Remove the pan from the heat and let the dough cool for about 5 minutes. This is an important step; it cools the dough enough to prevent the egg from cooking when you add it.
-
After 5 minutes, mix in the egg and vanilla extract. Stir until fully incorporated and smooth. The resulting mixture should be thick and slightly glossy—just the right consistency for piping.
-
Prepare a piping bag by fitting it with a star tip. Transfer your churro dough into the piping bag, making sure to push it down to eliminate any air pockets.
-
Next, heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or a fryer to about 350°F (175°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it; if it sizzles and rises to the top, it’s ready.
-
Pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut them at your desired length. Fry the churros until they are golden brown, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. This process usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
-
Once cooked, remove the churros from the oil and drain them on paper towels. It’s essential to remove excess oil for a better texture.
-
In a separate bowl, combine the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. While the churros are still warm, roll them in the sugar mixture until fully coated. The tremendous aromatic sweetness will immediately enhance their appeal.
-
Serve immediately for the best experience. Optional: Consider serving with a side of warm chocolate sauce or dulce de leche for dipping. This extra indulgence elevates the churro experience to a whole new level!
