Gingerbread with Molasses Frosting

Directions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This temperature will ensure that your gingerbread rises beautifully. Grease and flour a baking pan to prepare it for the batter.

  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon each of ground ginger and cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Ensure that these dry ingredients are well mixed; this will give your gingerbread tremendous flavor and texture.

  3. Cream the Butter and Sugar: In another large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened unsalted butter and 1/2 cup of brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is crucial, as it incorporates air into the batter, ensuring that your gingerbread has a delightful texture.

  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Beat in 1/2 cup of molasses and 1 large egg to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix until everything is well combined. The rich, dark color of the molasses will give your gingerbread a beautiful hue and moist crumb.

  5. Mix Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the previously whisked dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir gently until just combined. Avoid over-mixing; this will help maintain that tender texture, ensuring every bite is soft and flavorful.

  6. Transfer to Baking Pan: Pour the gingerbread batter into your prepared baking pan, smoothing out the top for an even finish.

  7. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the center of the gingerbread. It should come out clean. This is a tremendous indicator that your dessert is perfectly baked.

  8. Cool Before Frosting: Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for a while before transferring it to a wire rack. Once completely cool, it’s time to frost with a delightful molasses frosting.
