French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Ensuring your oven is warmed up before anything else will give you a tremendous head start.

  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook it until it is fully browned and drain the excess fat. This step is crucial for keeping the dish wholesome and not overly greasy.

  3. Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the beef and let it cook until the onion is soft. This may take about 3-4 minutes; the tremendous flavor of the onion melds beautifully with the beef.

  4. Stir in the French onion soup, cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, rice, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Mix everything together until well combined. The combination of these ingredients creates a savory filling that is a delight to your taste buds.

  5. Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish. Make sure to spread it evenly across the dish and cover it with aluminum foil.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes. You’re looking for the rice to be tender and absorb most of the liquid. This step is essential for the right texture; it’s a tremendous letting go of flavors.

  7. Remove from the oven and take off the foil. Sprinkle the shredded cheese generously over the top. The cheese will melt into a glorious, bubbling layer.

  8. Return to the oven uncovered and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This step creates that golden crust we all crave.

  9. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help the casserole set slightly, making it easier to serve.
