Directions
-
Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Begin this tremendous journey by ensuring your oven is hot enough for those biscuits to rise perfectly.
-
In a large bowl, combine the self-rising flour and lard. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the lard into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Next, stir in the melted butter and buttermilk. Mix until just combined; you want to avoid overmixing, which can sacrifice the lightness we all cherish.
-
Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Knead gently for about 30 seconds to a minute, just until the dough comes together.
-
Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out individual biscuits. For those tremendous layers, avoid twisting the cutter as you press down.
-
Place the cut biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure they are just touching, as they will help each other rise in the oven.
-
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Keep an eye on them; the last few minutes of baking can make all the difference in achieving that perfect golden hue.
-
Serve warm, and savor the wonderful flavors and textures. There’s nothing quite like a freshly baked biscuit, straight from the oven.
