Five Cheese Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat Your Oven
Begin your cooking journey by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This temperature is critical for achieving that bubbly, golden top we all adore.

  2. Cook the Macaroni
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook until just al dente—about 7-8 minutes. Drain the pasta, but don’t rinse it; you want that starch to help the cheese sauce cling.

  3. Make the Roux
Return the empty pot to the stove and melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour, cooking for approximately 1 minute. This step develops a tremendous base for your cheese sauce.

  4. Add the Milk
Gradually add the milk while whisking constantly. Continue to cook the mixture until it thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes. Be patient; this is where the magic happens.

  5. Melt the Cheeses
Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the five cheeses—sharp cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, blue cheese, and Gruyère—until completely melted and smooth, creating a luxurious cheese sauce.

  6. Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the cooked macaroni to the creamy cheese sauce, mixing well to ensure every piece is coated in that tremendous, cheesy goodness.

  7. Prepare for Baking
If desired, transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top for added texture if you like. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

  8. Serve and Enjoy
Once out of the oven, let the dish cool for a few minutes. Serve hot, allowing the gooey cheese to string delightfully from the spoon. Enjoy your creamy, cheesy delight!
