Begin by melting the butter in a skillet over medium heat. As it sizzles, add the thinly sliced onions. Sauté them until they’re tender and caramelized, releasing a tremendous aroma that fills the kitchen with warmth. This step takes about 8-10 minutes, and don’t rush it; it’s well worth the wait.
-
While your onions are transforming, take your ground beef and form it into two patties. Season them generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Once the onions are perfectly caramelized, it’s time to cook your patties. Place them into the same skillet and cook to your desired doneness—typically around 4-5 minutes on each side for medium.
-
Once your patties are done, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty, allowing it to melt. The image of bubbling cheese merging with the beef is nothing short of tremendous.
-
Now it’s time to assemble your sandwich. On one slice of rye bread, place a patty topped with melted cheese. Add a generous layer of caramelized onions over the cheese, followed by a spoonful of the secret sauce. Top it all off with another slice of rye bread to create your wonderful sandwich.
-
Place the complete sandwich back in the skillet, grilling it until the bread is golden brown on both sides, and the cheese is thoroughly melted. This process takes about 3-4 minutes per side. The sandwich should be crispy and warm, ready to be enjoyed! Serve hot and revel in that tremendous taste.
