Directions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. This step ensures an easy release of your cake once baked.
-
Pour the apple pie filling into the greased baking dish. Spread it evenly across the bottom, creating a tremendous base of warm, sweet apples.
-
Optional: Sprinkle the apple filling lightly with ground cinnamon and a pinch of salt. This not only enhances the flavor but also makes the dish even more aromatic as it bakes.
-
Evenly scatter the dry cake mix over the apple filling. It’s important not to stir, as you want the mix to sit atop the filling, allowing it to create a beautiful and tender crust during baking.
-
If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts over the cake mix for an added crunch and depth of flavor. Pecans or walnuts both work well here and offer a tremendous textural contrast.
-
Arrange the slices of butter evenly on top of the cake mix. This provides moisture and richness, allowing the top to crisp while the cake bakes.
-
Bake the dump cake in your preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes. You will know it’s done when the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling, releasing a mouthwatering aroma.
-
Let cool for about 15 to 20 minutes before serving. This waiting period allows the flavors to meld and makes the cake easier to cut.
