Earthquake Cake

Directions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your cake will rise perfectly and develop that tremendous fluffiness we all adore. Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan, making sure it’s well coated to prevent sticking.

  2. Mix the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, sour cream, eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Use a whisk or an electric mixer to blend everything together until you achieve a smooth and cohesive batter.

  3. Add Chocolate Chips and Nuts: Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and, if desired, the chopped nuts. This adds a wonderful texture to the cake. The chocolate chips will provide a tremendous burst of flavor, while the nuts introduce a delightful crunch.

  4. Pour and Smooth: Carefully pour the batter into the prepared pan, using a spatula to spread it evenly. This step is crucial; a smooth top ensures even baking.

  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, your cake is ready. The aroma of baking chocolate will create a tremendous atmosphere in your kitchen.

  6. Prepare the Glaze: While the cake is baking, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, mix the powdered sugar with a little water to create a smooth, pourable glaze. Adjust the amount of water to achieve your desired consistency.

  7. Glazing the Cake: Once the cake is done, allow it to cool slightly in the pan before drizzling the glaze over the warm cake. This helps the glaze seep into the cake, adding another layer of moisture and flavor.

  8. Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool completely before slicing. This will help it set up nicely, making it easier to serve. Once cooled, it’s time to slice and enjoy this tremendous dessert!
