Death by Chocolate Poke Cake

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to ensure easy removal of your cake. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the instructions provided on the box. Pour the prepared batter into the greased dish and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, typically around 25-30 minutes. Once baked, let the cake cool for about 10 minutes in the dish.

  2. While waiting for the cake to cool, grab a bowl and whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of cold milk. Ensure the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, allowing it to thicken into a tremendous, creamy filling.

  3. After the cake has cooled, it’s time to create those signature holes! Using a wooden spoon handle or a straw, poke holes all over the top of the cake. This step allows the pudding to seep into the cake, creating those delightful flavors in every bite. Pour the prepared pudding mixture over the still-warm cake, ensuring it fills all the holes. For the best results, refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour to let the pudding set.

  4. Now, let’s prepare the ganache. In a saucepan, heat 1 cup of heavy cream until it begins to simmer, being careful not to let it boil. Once simmering, remove it from the heat and immediately add the 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until all the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Allow it to cool slightly before pouring it over the chilled cake for a tremendous finish.

  5. For the whipped topping, beat 2 cups of heavy cream, 1/4 cup of powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a mixing bowl until stiff peaks form. This fluffy mixture will add a light contrast to the rich chocolate layers below. Spread the whipped topping generously over the ganache layer, smoothing it out with a spatula.

  6. To elevate the presentation, garnish the top of your cake with mini chocolate chips, chocolate shavings, and if you like, some crushed chocolate cookies for added texture and flair. Refrigerate the assembled cake for another hour to allow all the flavors to meld beautifully.

  7. Once everything is ready and the flavors have had time to harmonize, slice the cake carefully and serve. Enjoy each piece as you dive into layers of chocolate bliss that are nothing short of tremendous!
