Crispy Cod Strips with Tartar Dipping Sauce

  1. Begin by patting the cod strips dry with paper towels. This step is crucial for achieving that tremendous crispy texture. Lightly season the strips with salt, pepper, and paprika, ensuring they are evenly coated.

  2. Next, prepare your three bowls for the breading process. In the first bowl, place the flour. In the second, pour in the beaten eggs. Finally, in the third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs with garlic powder. To ensure a tremendous coating, dip each cod strip first in the flour, then in the egg, and finally into the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently to help the breadcrumbs adhere well.

  3. For frying, heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, reaching about 180°C (350°F). Carefully add the cod strips, frying them for 2–3 minutes on each side until they are golden and crispy. If you prefer a healthier method, air-frying is an excellent option: spray the coated strips lightly with oil and air-fry at 200°C (400°F) for 10–12 minutes, turning them halfway through. Once cooked, drain the strips on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  4. While the cod strips are frying, let’s prepare the tartar sauce. In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, chopped pickles (or relish), Dijon mustard, lemon juice, capers, and fresh herbs. Mix well and season to taste with salt and pepper. Let the sauce chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

  5. Serve the crispy cod strips hot, accompanied by the tartar dipping sauce and fresh lemon wedges. For a complete meal, enjoy them with crunchy fries, tangy coleslaw, or a light green salad. The combination of the crispy fish and the creamy tartar sauce creates a tremendous balance that is simply irresistible.
