Crispy Cherry Turnovers

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). This first step is crucial as a hot oven ensures a tremendous puff in the pastry once it meets the heat.

  2. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to ensure it doesn’t stick. Then, cut it into squares, about 4 inches on each side. The size is just right for a generous helping of filling without overwhelming the pastry.

  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the cherries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss everything together gently until the cherries are well-coated. This filling will create a tremendous flavor contrast when paired with the pastry.

  4. Place a spoonful of cherry filling in the center of each square, making sure not to overfill them. The filling is delicious, but if you add too much, it could spill out during baking.

  5. Fold the pastry over to create a triangle, pressing the edges together. Seal the edges with the tines of a fork for a decorative touch and to ensure the filling stays inside during baking.

  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the turnovers generously with the egg wash to give them a beautiful golden color as they bake.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. The aroma that fills your kitchen during baking is simply tremendous and will have everyone eagerly awaiting these treats.

  8. Let cool slightly before serving. They are best enjoyed warm, but they also hold up well for later snacking!
