Bread in a Bag Recipe

Directions

  1. Combine Ingredients in a Bag: Start by adding 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast, and warm water to a freezer-strength zip-top bag. Seal the bag tightly, pressing out any air, and then shake gently. Leave it to rest for about 10 to 15 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, which is a tremendous sign that the yeast is activating.

  2. Add Remaining Ingredients: Open the bag and add the remaining flour, olive oil, and salt into the mix. Seal the bag again, this time squeezing it slightly as you knead through the bag until a soft dough forms. The warmth of your hands encourages a tremendous transformation as the ingredients meld together.

  3. Knead the Dough: Carefully turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it briefly until it feels smooth and elastic, typically about 5 minutes. You will notice how the dough’s texture improves, becoming more cohesive with every push and fold.

  4. Shape and Rise: Next, shape your dough into a log and place it in a greased loaf pan. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm area until it doubles in size. This step usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes, so be patient as your dough puffs up with tremendous potential.

  5. Bake: Once the dough has risen beautifully, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes, or until it turns a golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. After it cools for a few minutes, enjoy slicing into your fresh creation, marveling at the tremendous aroma that wafts through your kitchen.
